What is pH and why is it so important?
pH (hydrogen potential) measures the acidity of a product on a scale of 1 to 14.
- The Human scalp pH is between 4.5 and 5.5, which makes it naturally slightly acidic.
- A shampoo with too high a pH (alkaline), that is to say greater than 7, can unbalance this environment, create irritation, excess sebum or intense dryness.
- A pH 5 shampoo is ideal for maintaining this fragile balance.
An unbalanced scalp is like poor soil for a plant: hair becomes thinner, falls out more easily, becomes dull or brittle.
pH5 shampoo: an ally for the scalp
The use of a pH5 shampoo is recommended by dermatologists and trichologists (scalp specialists) for many reasons:
1. Preservation of the skin barrier
A slightly acidic pH protects the scalp against the external attacks, including bacteria, fungi and irritants. It strengthens the skin's protective barrier, thus limiting redness, itching or dandruff.
2. Microbiome Balance
Like the skin, the scalp has its microbiome, an ecosystem of beneficial microorganisms. A pH5 helps maintain this fragile balance, avoiding imbalances often responsible for dandruff or chronic irritation.
3. Sebum regulation
pH directly influences the production of sebum, this natural oil that protects our hair:
- Too much sebum? Oily scalp, oily dandruff, clogged follicles.
- Not enough? Dry scalp, itchy, dry dandruff, dull hair.
The pH5 shampoo acts as a regulator, gently, without being harsh.
4. Protection of the hair fiber
An adapted pH helps to close the hair scales, making it smoother, less brittle and shinier. It also preserves color for colored hair and improves natural hydration.
Beware of shampoos that are too aggressive
Many conventional shampoos are formulated with sulfates (aggressive detergents) and silicones :
- The sulfates strip the natural protective barrier of the scalp, creating dryness and inflammation.
- The silicones, they form an occlusive film on the hair and scalp, which can in the long term suffocate follicles and promote hair loss.
These products, often Alkaline pH, completely unbalance the natural environment of the scalp.
How do you know if your shampoo meets the correct pH?
- Check the labels: some manufacturers indicate the pH on the packaging or the product sheet.
- If in doubt, it is possible to use pH test strips, available in pharmacies.
- Avoid shampoos that do not specify their pH and contain sulfates or silicones.

Who is this particularly important for?
A neutral pH shampoo without sulfates is recommended for:
- the menopausal women, whose scalp becomes more sensitive with hormonal fluctuations;
- people suffering from hormonal hair loss, linked to stress, pregnancy or medical treatment;
- those which present oily hair, dandruff or itching chronicles.
