Cross -country, red plates on the scalp and small white particles that fall on your shoulders? You may suffer from an eczema of the scalp.
What to do to fight against this unpleasant phenomenon? We tell you everything.

Eczema: What is it and what is it due to?

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin tissues which causes itching, the appearance of red plates and skin lesions. These lesions produce particles which detach from the epidermis, called "squamous". They are generally tiny, but can become very visible in case of significant inflammation.

There are several types of eczema, of which here are the most common:

Atopic eczema

This kind of eczema, the most common, is an inflammation linked to a genetic fragility of the skin. The skin barrier is in this case more vulnerable, it therefore offers less protection in the face of attacks. This eczema is characterized by intense itching, the appearance of sometimes vesicular and oozing red plates, as well as very dry skin.

If this eczema is hereditary, certain elements can also trigger it: pollution, temperature changes, certain clothes, sweat, stress, allergens or microbes.

Contact eczema

This is an allergic reaction caused by an element in contact with your skin. Although it has the same symptoms as atopic eczema (red plates, itching and oozing), inflammation is in this case localized and temporary: it appears only when your skin is in contact with the allergen concerned. It is then necessary to identify this one (fabrics, jewelry, cosmetics, care products ...) and avoid it!

Scalp eczema or "seborrheic dermatitis"

This specific eczema of scalp manifests itself by the appearance of oily skin particles, redness and itching. Inflammation can be caused by the use of a shampoo, a beauty or care product, a permanent, a coloring or even a compulsive skull scraper.

You have itchy ... How do you know if it is eczema?

Here are the main signs that may indicate an eczema:

  • Appearance of red plates
  • Irresistible itching, sometimes very intense
  • Supporting lesions and vesicles
  • Formation of crusts that end up detaching

Be careful, however not to be confused eczema and psoriasis. The skin reactions caused by psoriasis are close to those of eczema, but require different treatment. If you have a doubt, see your doctor or dermatologist.

What is the impact of eczema on your hair health and possibly on the loss of your hair?

Eczema can cause significant lesions on your scalp. However, a healthy scalp is essential to have healthy hair. With a damaged scalp, your hair may be weakened and break faster. In the most extreme cases, we observe a hair loss due to intense itching and excessive friction of the scalp.
